This module provides an introduction to the NSW Workers Compensation Guidelines for the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 4th Edition (the Guidelines) and their application within the NSW workers compensation system. Participants will gain an understanding of the principles, processes and assessment methodologies used to evaluate permanent impairment, including the relationship between the NSW Guidelines and the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Fifth Edition (AMA5).
The module outlines the role and responsibilities of assessors, key legislative and guideline requirements, and the process for conducting objective, consistent and defensible impairment assessments.
Required Resources

- You will also need access to the Guidelines which are available to download on the SIRA website.
Objectives
This module provides:

An understanding of the key principles when assessing permanent impairment in accordance with the Guidelines. These include:
- Understanding relevant definitions such as maximum medical improvement, the philosophy of assessing by analogy, activities of daily living, the concepts of rounding, deductions for pre-existing impairments (deductible proportion), and what to do when treatment is refused.
- Learning how to assess multiple impairments, how to handle the possibility of future deterioration, and inconsistent presentation.
- Using the combined values chart.
- A systematic approach to assessing permanent impairment using the Guidelines.
- An outline of the role and expectations of an assessor using the Guidelines, that is, provide an accurate assessment of the worker in accordance with the Guidelines and the worker’s presentation on the day of assessment.
