Prerequisite
Successful completion of the Core Module is required before enrolling in this specialist body system module.
This Module provides specialist training in the assessment of permanent spinal impairment in accordance with Part 6 of the SIRA Motor Accidents Guidelines: Permanent Impairment (the Guidelines) and Chapter 3 of the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Fourth Edition (AMA4). Participants will develop an understanding of the principles, processes and methodologies used to assess spinal impairment arising from motor accident injuries.
Designed for health practitioners seeking authorisation and listing as Permanent Impairment Assessors in the NSW CTP scheme, this course provides a systematic approach to assessing spinal impairment using the Diagnostic Related Estimate (DRE) method and the Motor Accidents Guidelines. Participants will learn how to assess cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine injuries, determine whole person impairment (WPI), and apply key assessment principles through practical case studies and worked examples.
The module examines key concepts including causation, threshold injury, stability, radiculopathy, multilevel structural compromise, spinal fusion, corticospinal tract injury, cauda equina syndrome, pre-existing impairment deductions and impairment reporting requirements.
Successful completion of this module, together with successful completion of the Core Module, contributes to eligibility for listing as a CTP Permanent Impairment Assessor for spinal impairment assessments in NSW.

Objectives
This module provides:
- An understanding of the key principles for assessing spinal impairment in accordance with AMA4 and the NSW Motor Accident Guidelines.

A systematic approach to assessing permanent impairment of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.
- An understanding of the requirements for causation, threshold injury and stability when undertaking spinal impairment assessments.
- The ability to calculate and report whole person impairment (WPI) for spinal injuries using the Guidelines.
