This module provides specialist training in the assessment of permanent impairment of the upper extremity in accordance with Part 6 of the NSW Motor Accident Guidelines: Permanent Impairment (the Guidelines) and Chapter 3, Section 3.1 of the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Fourth Edition (AMA4). Participants will develop an understanding of the principles, processes and methodologies used to assess upper extremity impairment arising from motor accident injuries.
This module provides a systematic approach to assessing upper extremity impairment using the Guidelines and AMA4. Participants will learn how to assess impairment of the shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand and fingers, determine whole person impairment (WPI), and apply key assessment principles through practical case studies and worked examples.

Objectives
This module provides:
- An understanding of the key principles for assessing upper extremity impairment in accordance with AMA4 and the NSW Motor Accident Guidelines.
- A systematic approach to assessing permanent impairment of the shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand and fingers.
- An understanding of the role of causation, threshold injury and stability when undertaking upper extremity impairment assessments.
- An understanding of how to calculate and report whole person impairment (WPI) for upper extremity injuries using the Guidelines.
