Prerequisite
Successful completion of the Core Module is required before enrolling in this specialist body system module.
This module provides specialist training in the assessment of permanent impairment of the lower extremity in accordance with Chapter 3 of the NSW Workers Compensation Guidelines for the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 4th Edition (the Guidelines) and Chapter 17 of the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Fifth Edition (AMA5). Participants will develop an understanding of the principles, processes and methodologies used to assess lower extremity impairment arising from work-related injury.
Designed for medical practitioners seeking accreditation as Permanent Impairment Assessors in the NSW Workers Compensation Scheme, this module provides a systematic approach to assessing lower extremity impairment using the Guidelines and AMA5. Participants will learn how to assess impairment of the hip, knee, leg, ankle and foot, determine whole person impairment (WPI), and apply key assessment principles through practical case studies and worked examples.
Successful completion of this module, together with successful completion of the Core Module, contributes to eligibility for listing as a trained Workers Compensation Permanent Impairment Assessor for lower extremity impairment assessments in NSW.

Objectives
This module provides:
- An understanding of the key principles for assessing lower extremity impairment in accordance with AMA5 and the NSW Workers Compensation Guidelines.
- A systematic approach to assessing permanent impairment of the hip, knee, leg, ankle and foot.
- An understanding of the assessment methodologies used for lower extremity impairment, including diagnosis-based estimates, range of motion and anatomical assessment methods.
- An understanding of how to calculate and report whole person impairment (WPI) for lower extremity injuries using the Guidelines.
