This module provides specialist training in the assessment of psychiatric and psychological impairment in accordance with Chapter 11 of the NSW Workers Compensation Guidelines for the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 4th Edition (the Guidelines). Participants will develop an understanding of the principles, processes and methodologies used to assess psychiatric and psychological impairment arising from work-related injury.
This module provides a systematic approach to assessing psychiatric and psychological impairment using the Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale (PIRS). Participants will learn how to determine whole person impairment (WPI) and apply key assessment principles through practical case studies and worked examples.
Required Resources
- You will need access to the Guidelines (specifically Chapter 11), they are available to download on the SIRA website.
- Please Note: AMA5 is not required for Psychiatry Module training. Participants should, however, be familiar with Chapters 1 and 2 of AMA5, which cover the principles and philosophy of impairment assessment.
Objectives
This module provides:
- An understanding of the key principles for assessing psychiatric and psychological impairment in accordance with the NSW Workers Compensation Guidelines.
- A systematic approach to assessing permanent impairment using the Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale (PIRS).
- An understanding of the role and responsibilities of an assessor when undertaking psychiatric and psychological impairment assessments.
- An understanding of how to determine and report whole person impairment (WPI) for psychiatric and psychological injuries using the Guidelines.
