This module provides specialist training in the assessment of mental and behavioural disorders in accordance with Sections 6.201 to 6.228 of the NSW Motor Accident Guidelines: Permanent Impairment (the Guidelines). Participants will develop an understanding of the principles, processes and methodologies used to assess psychiatric and psychological impairment arising from motor accident injuries.
This module provides a systematic approach to assessing mental and behavioural disorders using the Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale (PIRS). Participants will learn how to determine whole person impairment (WPI) and apply key assessment principles through practical case studies and worked examples.

- Please Note: AMA4 is not required for Mental and Behavioural Disorders Module training. Participants should, however, be familiar with Chapters 1 and 2 of AMA4, which cover the principles and philosophy of impairment assessment.
Objectives
This module provides:
- An understanding of the key principles for assessing mental and behavioural disorders in accordance with the NSW Motor Accident Guidelines.
- A systematic approach to assessing permanent impairment using the Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale (PIRS).
- An understanding of the role of causation, threshold injury and stability when undertaking mental and behavioural disorder impairment assessments.
- An understanding of how to determine and report whole person impairment (WPI) for psychiatric and psychological injuries using the Guidelines.
