Prerequisite
Successful completion of the Core Module is required before enrolling in this specialist body system module.
This module provides specialist training in the assessment of permanent impairment of the central and peripheral nervous system in accordance with Chapter 5 of the NSW Workers Compensation Guidelines for the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 4th Edition (the Guidelines) and Chapter 13 of the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Fifth Edition (AMA5). Participants will develop an understanding of the principles, processes and methodologies used to assess nervous system impairment arising from work-related injury.
Designed for specialist medical practitioners seeking accreditation as Permanent Impairment Assessors in the NSW Workers Compensation Scheme, this module provides a systematic approach to assessing nervous system impairment using the Guidelines and AMA5. Participants will learn how to assess impairments affecting the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves and peripheral nervous system, determine whole person impairment (WPI), and apply key assessment principles through practical case studies and worked examples.
Successful completion of this module, together with successful completion of the Core Module, contributes to eligibility for listing as a trained Workers Compensation Permanent Impairment Assessor for nervous system impairment assessments in NSW.

Objectives
This module provides:
- An understanding of the key principles for assessing nervous system impairment in accordance with AMA5 and the NSW Workers Compensation Guidelines.
- A systematic approach to assessing permanent impairment of the central and peripheral nervous system.
- An understanding of the assessment methodologies used for nervous system impairment, including cerebral, cranial nerve, spinal cord and peripheral nerve impairments.
- An understanding of how to determine and report whole person impairment (WPI) for nervous system injuries using the Guidelines.
